I’m currently reading James Clear’s Atomic Habits, which is all about implementing systems and making small behavioral changes with the hope of yielding big results.
Early on in the book, Clear suggests readers “forget about goals, [and] focus on systems instead.” I think he raises a great point here. There are a lot of pitfalls with goal-setting, especially if you are just blindly writing down targets on a legal pad.
I’m still a big fan of setting goals, but there’s some truth to the saying that a goal without a plan is a wish. My goal setting “workflow” looks something like this: determine the goal, backwards plan my way there, get to work, and check in periodically—I look back at all of my annual goals about once per quarter.
With that being said, I have two main fitness objectives for 2024.
Total 1200lbs in a powerlifting meet—I set the goal of 1100lbs in 2023 and surpassed that.
Complete an ultramarathon—I’m running a 50km trail race in February, which will be my longest run since completing the St Jude Marathon in 2019.
I’ve determined the goals, and now I’ve got some backwards planning to do.
