On Monday morning, I had absolutely no desire to show up to the gym at 6am and deadlift. I had a busy weekend, slept poorly, and lacked the motivation to work or work out to start the week.
But I did, and I (easily) set a 5lb PR for my 3-rep deadlift.
The things that we don’t want to show up for tend to be some of the most pivotal events in the trajectories of our lives. That’s where habits are built or broken and our work ethic is defined.
Work calls that I did not want to make have lead to closed deals.
Mornings that I did not want to read or write have produced some of my best articles and posts.
Sunday worship services that I did not want to get out of bed for have given me the Word that I most needed to hear.
But how many other rewards have I missed out on from the times that I decided not to show up? There’s no sure way of knowing, but it’s on me to keep doing my best to minimize those losses by doing something that requires no special gift or talent—simply being present and ready to work.
