I wrote previously about the importance of writing things down, especially one’s goals. Last week, I had some deeper conversations with mentors and friends about just that.
In general, I will try and set annual goals just before the turn of the year. I prioritize my goals, and most everything else in life, based on the rank-order written by Major Phil Kramer in his book, A More Elite Man. Major Kramer, who served as the Ranger Training Brigade chaplain when I was in Ranger School from 2018-2019, ranks a man’s roles in life accordingly:
Pilgrim
Partner
Parent
Professional
Player
I’m not yet a parent, but I do play every other part listed above. In turn, when writing my goals for 2023, I broke them down into the following categories:
Faith & Family
Finance & Professional
Fitness & Recreation
Below is the abridged version of my goals for this year. I do my best to check in on these about once a quarter or so.
Faith & Family
Join a church
Plan wedding & get married
Join a church small group/Bible study
Hold in-house Bible study with my fiancé
Finance & Professional
Open an HSA and start making contributions
Make extra principal payments on mortgage
Become an ACE Certified Personal Trainer
Have another article published by EliteFTS
Post weekly on Substack
Fitness & Recreation
Complete 25K trail race
Compete in my first powerlifting meet and total 1100lbs in the 181 weight class
Trail run or hike in the mountains once per month
Get back into golf
Sign up for a 2024 ultra-marathon race
As it stands, I am on track to accomplish most, if not all of these.
What are your goals for 2023? How did you set them? Let me know below.
